World Book Day-1st March

Never judge a book by its cover they say and certainly not on World Book Day. And especially when investigating the work of Jeremy May. Here, beneath what is bound,  a ring, a bangle or a necklace could be found.

May uses a top-secret lamination technique to create bespoke pieces from a bookkeeping the original binding as a beautiful box too. You could probably still get the gist of the story reading around one of his luxury adornments.

Here’s a nice little video about his process and you don’t have to read between the lines for the booky puns.

If this inspires you to pick up a book, your tools or take back your library books have a wonderful World Book Day.

The Pantone colour of the year is a result of research into trends in fashion and home interior design so it is worth being in the know. The colour of the year for 2017 is greenery. LJS tutor Anna Campbell looks at some jewellery inspiration for this colour trends.

Pantone are a commercial printing company known for their colour matching system. However, they have become most famous for their announcement of the colour of the year. This is discussed and agreed by industry insiders and is often influenced by fashion and interior trends that work well in advance and is just as important for jewellery makers.

The colour for 2017 is Greenery 15-0343 ‘a refreshing and revitalising shade symbolic of new beginnings’.

There are many green gemstones that will fit in with this trend including emerald, tourmaline, peridot, tsavorite garnet, labradorite, demantoid garnet, beryl, jade and apatite as well as other forms of jewellery including enamelling and beading.

Take a look at some examples to inspire you.

Competition winner: Kim’s style set for photography makeover

September jewellery making competition winner Kim Styles made this ring by hand. It is sterling silver and has 42 solder joints done without paste, just using torch control, and is set with a large faceted cabochon prehenite.

Kim says she “struggles to get her jewellery photographs to do justice to her jewellery”. So she is over the moon to win a professional photography shoot of five of her pieces by photographer and LJS tutor Matt Cheetham.

Here at the school were are excited to see which pieces Kim chooses to have photographed and the final images, some of which we will hopefully share with you here on the blog.

Meanwhile if you want to improve your photography skills, find out how you can learn from Matt on our one-day workshop.
